WASHINGTON, DC (HBN) — 13 year old Akshay Buddiga correctly spelled the word “alopecoid” after becoming wide-eyed and collapsing on stage yesterday at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. That word has since been banned from the competition.
In a courageous and valiant effort, Buddiga heard the word, stood quietly for a second, and then suddenly hit the deck. He went on to bounce right back up, and take second place in the competition.
Akshay’s brother had been a previous winner of the National Spelling Bee.
Buddiga, from Indiana, brought the crowd to its feet after he fainted and then recovered. 46 kids participated in the National Spelling Bee.
The winner of the event won $17,000 in cash and other assorted goodies.
