NEW ORLEANS, LA (HBN) - Shane Shafer, a 50 year-old man from Texas, recently underwent surgery to get rid of his hiccups. He hiccuped every 3-4 seconds for around 7 months in a manner that sounded like a dog barking.
Although he got along well with animals during his months of barking, Shafer is of course happy to be cured of this annoying and agonizing condition.
He had what is called a Vagus Nerve Stimulator implanted into his chest on June 23rd, 2004 at the Louisiana State University Health Center.
The device is electronic and allows Shafer to do his normal day-to-day activities. Neurologists and Neurosurgeons are now taking note of this new procedure because they have found that by blocking the vagus nerves, hiccups can be eliminated.
Dogs are disappointed in Texas, but Shafer doesn’t care. He’s just happy he doesn’t have to sound like one of them any more.
