98 Reasons For Being

Set in the 19th century, this story revolves around the German psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffman, author of STRUWWELPETER (which Mark Twain translated into English), a popular and influential collection of moral tales he wrote for his own children in 1844. Hoffman was also famous for his revolutionary ideas about the way people were treated in mental institutions. As the head of an asylum in Frankfurt, Hoffman prefers to treat patients with a combination of talk and understanding--and his breakthrough case is a young woman named Hannah, who is unable to cope with her despairing life, and whose melancholy parallels Hoffman`s own. In the course of their talks--in which the doctor reveals as much about his own sad life with an unsympathetic wife--both find a measure of healing. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
