Seasoned by a strict morality, the small town of Little Cypress in the 1950s seems polite and comfortably indolent. When Fran, pregnant with her illegitimate child, mysteriously moves to town and into the room above Gorkey's General Store, the townsfolk whisper idly. One of them will adopt her newborn, they say, and Fran will soon be gone. But Fran has different plans. She keeps her new daughter, Cora, and stays in Little Cypress. Marked by the conformity of the times, scrupulously preserved by Dr. Johnson in his weekly newspaper column, Little Cypress continues its torpid existence until one day the entire town wakes to discover it is not itself. Something strange is happening. Moved by the beauty of an off-course migration of Monarch butterflies, the townsfolk, in a surreal disclosure of private lives, decide to readdress their fate.
