Wardlin Stuart, serving a 10-year prison sentence for killing a man in a bar fight, develops something he calls prayerstyle --a supposedly purely secular method of supplicating the universe for minor requests. Amazingly, prayerstyle actually works, and as a result of its application, Wardlin finds the love of his life, marries her, and is paroled. When he publishes a book including his prayers and a guide to his method, it becomes a runaway success...and a threat to Monroe Treat, a power-hungry televangelist. Wardlin finds both fame and the relentless onslaught of Treat`s followers challenging enough, but matters are made more complicated by the fact that the metaphorical figure to whom many of Wardlin`s prayers are addressed, the Lord of Loneliness, may have an objective reality. Lucius Shepard, a writer known primarily for his literary SF, ventures considerably farther out into the mainstream with this haunting exploration of faith and organized religion in America.
