When Claire Frayn`s brother Steven is shot to death, the Frayn family begins to fall apart. Claire`s father retreats to a shed to build an airplane even though he does not know how to fly it, her mother begins to live in a glass factory, her aunts and uncles become unhinged, and Claire grows obsessively involved with her studies of biology. After a not-so-chance encounter, she begins an unconventional correspondence with a radical activist named Victor who claims to know who murdered Steven.
