This bleak but beautifully written novel is by a rancher who raises Blackbelly sheep in Oregon. In her novel of that name, she creates a reclusive rancher named Chas McPherson, whose basically good heart goes unrecognized by his fellow townspeople because of his habit of speaking his mind. When a neighborly act of kindness goes wrong, he is hunted down as a possible arsonist. Innocent but resigned to the inevitability of a town looking for a scapegoat, Chas refuses to defend himself. At the same time, his loneliness is alleviated by a woman named Mattie, whom he has had to hire to care for his old and ailing father. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
