Death and the King`s Horseman

Death and the King`s Horseman

Death and the King`s Horseman

In the traditional Nigerian village where this play is set, custom demands that the King`s chief horseman accompany his ruler into the afterlife by committing suicide when the King dies. When the King in this play dies, his horseman is relieved when he is barred from his traditional role by the colonial powers that have taken control of his country, but his relief turns sour when more traditional villagers rebuke him for accepting the colonists` ruling and ignoring his duty. This play examines the conflicts between the traditions of one culture and the prescriptions of another, and the ways in which colonials simultaneously embrace and resist the changes imposed on them by colonists.
