This short story, lengthier than most of George Eliot`s short fiction, was written in 1859, at the time of the death of Eliot`s sister. It tells the nightmarish story of a young clairvoyant named Latimer whose ability to read minds brings him nothing but sorrow. He marries his brother Alfred`s fiance after Alfred`s death--a woman named Bertha Grant, the most evil and manipulative character in Eliot`s fiction whose final act of horror is an attempt to poison Latimer. This is thwarted, and the two separate. Several elements of Eliot`s later work are evident in The Lifted Veil, including the characters of Rosamond Vincy in MIDDLEMARCH and Gwendolyn Harleth in DANIEL DERONDA, as well as themes in ROMOLA and THE MILL ON THE FLOSS.
