Elizabeth Spencer`s classic novella is set in and around Florence, a city she evokes in beautifully evocative prose, in the summer of 1953. The tale centers on Margaret Johnson, an American woman who has come to Italy with her beautiful but mentally handicapped daughter, Clara, who at 26 has the mind of a 10-year-old. When Clara meets Fabrizio--son of a prominent Italian family--they fall in love and eventually wish to marry. Margaret`s dilemma is whether to reveal the truth about her daughter to Fabrizio`s family, or to step back and allow Clara to live her own life in her own way. THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, first published in 1960, was made into a 1962 movie with Olivia de Haviland, Yvette Mimieux, Rossano Brazzi, and George Hamilton; in 2005 it opened at New York`s Lincoln Center as an award-winning, smash-hit musical, written by Adam Guettel (grandson of Richard Rogers) and Craig Lucas.
