Seven Gothic Tales

Seven Gothic Tales

Isak Dinesen's collection of complex and allegorical short stories in the gothic mode, first published in 1934, concern themselves mainly with love and horror, and are peopled by ghosts, young maidens, courtiers, and monsters. In the first tale, The Deluge at Norderney, a monstrous flood strands four tourists in a hayloft, where they spend the night telling the stories of their lives. In the last tale, The Old Chevalier, an aged man falls in love with an indifferent prostitute who just may be Dinesen's prototype of a truly liberated woman. Most of the tales are set in a much earlier time -- the mid-19th century--which only adds to their exotic, fantastical flavor. This was Karen Blixen's first use of her pseudonym, which she devised so that editors would think she was a man and, presumably, look more kindly on her work. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
